So now what we share is we share the top 4, we share their names and their ranks and everything, and then we share a one line statement not of where this girl ranks, but of where she is in the core values. First five guys, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and practice performance. And one of the things Ive seen recently is that we, in fact we did a study on this and found that 47% of corporate America does not know their organizations core values, which, if you think about it, on one hand is extremely surprising. Im sorry, but I completely disagree with what youre saying. And he would be very patient and he wouldnt debate them and he would just nod and let them finish. Anson: Its your mom and your dad. And I called her up to sort of vet him. Under some delusion that these parents have, they think that by trying to raise their children with this idea of self-esteem or their praise for everyone, which is a part of the culture where everyone gets a trophy, they have eliminated standards for their own children. Your function is the bottom line. And then all of a sudden five minutes before the practice session begins a manager of the team comes up and hands us a practice outline of whats going to happen. I was just talking to a restaurant owner who was struggling to find the right mix of workers for whatever reason that might be. And I want to sit there and I want to get $100,000 for sitting there and just answering questions. Anson: I would like to be able to see the future. At the end of every single day in practice, youre going to get an email ranking you in that practice. And so I had all these ridiculous core values that I was expecting everyone to live by, but no one really lived by them except if it was a coincidence. Now is the period to escape the protection of loving parents that dont want you to get hurt. You have 4 years to get ready for the chaos at the university. That wasnt good. Is that true? To paraphrase Alex Ferguson of Man United fame, We want to take responsibility for our own action, our own errors, our own performance level, and eventually for every result.. But when I played for you, I could feel the love between the criticism and around the criticism. And he would say, youre not a sociologist. HR is the most important arm of your company. I mean, hes incredibly demanding and yet you can feel his love for you. Ive worked with him and a year or two later, he was the best salesman at the company. Yes, but not through any sort of authoritarianism. Melissa: So lets talk a little bit about these 28 factors that you identify and grade on or rate on every day. And so if they claim they have a 4.5 in the beat, which is professional level in terms of cardiovascular fitness, and yet their beat score was a 30, and the qualifying line to get on the field is 40, I will debate it with them. And its an article written about this woman that attended Columbia University, and she was sent there to study for a Ph.D. in Russian literature and Russian poetry. Yes, dont just be a leader in the business world, be a leader in your local community, certainly a leader in your family. So we have these more formal reviews basically 3 times a year. Im looking forward to it myself. Theres no cookie-cutter route to creating the people you want. And then once they do, once they start to finish high, once they start to play, they understand that everythings in their full control, including winning and losing matches at the highest possible level. Every aspect of almost every practice, its a competition. Anson: So I would love to have that superpower. I looked down at this thing and I was stunned. And its certainly not just the bottom line. He was the first coach in NCAA history to win 20 championships coaching a single sport. But basically thats one of many failed experiments that Ive done with my leaders. Whats the 1 word you think of when you think about culture? And so thats where we are right now. He is available for talks, presentations and confidential consultations. Not me. Anson: Well, they are good. But Im going to, you know, Im going to conform to the B.S. Were the best of the best. Thats a mistake. Now, the way we raise our kids, as we spend every single day ass-kissing all of them, they have no sense of authority because they know their parents are full of crap. Sam: Coach, I think theres a lot of stuff that any business owner could take from what you just said, especially the getting them to the truth part. What is our test? Anson: They all left the office with their tails firmly between their legs and they got to work. This kid is coming home from school. The first slide he showed was all I needed, and here was the first slide. I think theyre an amazing thing that really sets the tone for a whole organization. So I pulled her aside and I said, you know, so-and-so, Im sorry, but shut up. Each year the players grade themselves and their teammates on the extent to which they embody the core values. And we develop such an incredible mentality. When you fire these people, they are going to hate you for the rest of their lives, but they dont want to work for you. And wed love for you to come watch us at basketball practice.. And then what was really cool is in the spring of every players senior year we have our final banquet. Every one of my church teaches. If you guys learn one thing from me today, make sure your HR person has incredible insights into hiring the right people because your HR person is going to determine whether or not your company is going to be successful or not. Most certainly. And so I wish there were ways for me to sort out their character before I brought them in because that would have a huge impact on the kids we would end up offering scholarship money to. The first slide had the year 1969 on it. So whats critical for you, and actually the hiring process is everything for you, and so this is where, again, this is something that Jack Welch used to say, and I loved it. And then he patiently waits for, you know, this self-righteous CEO to finish and then he basically calmly says, well, if youd taken that energy that you invested in your bottom performer and you invested that in your top performers, your bottom line would be better. Its a huge mistake to recruit talent. You'll get an educated look at these two systems while Coach Dorrance talks you through them using a conversational approach, accompanied by . She says, you know what? We hate whiners in the program. And what protects them from all accountability? And here it is. Anson: And obviously, so now Iobviously I dont talk about having them destroy a program. And then basically getting their personal narrative to the truth and my opinion, those are the three most critical things about what my responsibility here is for these wonderful kids I get to train. And then all of a sudden at the end of practice, and theyre following this protocol, a buzzer goes off and they go from one drill to the next. And of course your mom totally agrees with you. So theres a line we draw. But whats shocking to us is how often extraordinary talent never gets on the field. Anson: please call me any time. So all of a sudden I was collecting all this data on all of the kids and what their teammates thought of their character. Ive learned the lesson that some people just dont want to be in my culture. My favorite moment, every time I would hear him speak, was when he would tell everyone in the room that every single year fire, the bottom 10% of your workforce, everyone in the room would gasp. Under Dorrance's leadership, the Tar Heels have won 21 of the 31 NCAA Women's Soccer Championships. Were trying to drive them to be accountable and to take responsibility for everything because in a typical narrative you dont. But heres what youve got to do.
